I picked up an 18-55 STM just for video vs the 17-55. The 17-55 is not quiet....but still a much better lens. If Canon made a silent smooth USM and put it into a gen II 17-55 it would be perfect.

It is nice though having a super lightweight option for video recording, and I got the lens white box for about $130.

Awesome! Been wanting to hear from someone that has use it more than a few tests. Do you have an uploaded clip?

Canon 70D/70-200 f4/17-55 2.8/BG-E9/430EZ I like DSLR's. It makes a distinction between photo fans and normal people who don't give a damn how a picture could look like

Not had my camera very long and so far think it is super. Photo attached of a tree sparrow that was in my garden last week. First one for over 5 years.

Help me...

I have the worst luck/trouble with high ISO images. The one below is a good example. This is JPEG; 6400; f/3.5 @ 1/50 -- I also set the white balance to Tungsten light.

The noise in the wall and window sills are awful IMO. I seem to always be taking these kinds of shots of rooms with a lot of white walls etc. Is that the issue? Are my settings bad?

QUOTED IMAGE

What kind of result did you expect? ISO 6400 is very high and the room is dark which makes the noise even more visible.

No crop camera can get a perfectly clean image under those conditions.

Get a lens that lets in more light like Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 that allows you to shoot with loser ISOs, or get a tripod. Also, noise reduction in PP make a pretty big difference.

Or just get a fullframe like the 6D

I understand all that. I see images that look a lot better with the exact same lens ... 18-135 STM (using my 15-85 probably would result in a very similar image). But, I always get very noisy images mostly on the walls and I'm wondering if it's mostly the subject matter. I don't shoot indoors much at all but had to do this to take pictures of the wife's christmas decorations. And, although she likes the pictures I hated them... lol

So are you saying that that image is about what should be expected in the very low light situation from the 70D?

It's as much your shooting, as much the post-processing. You can get pretty clean ISO6400 shots.

You need to overexpose by 1/3 to 2/3 f-stops(ETTR), maybe more if you plan to process the RAW.

The yellow tinge is the ever present CFL lighting, a lot can be done in post. If you ETTR, whatever little noise is left you can deal with it in post.

Unfortunately, you striped the Exif from the photo, and you don't allow editing of your photos, so we leave it at this.

Thanks. I'll give that a try and shoot RAW.

If you want to mess around with it...OK with me.

I gave you the settings above...

Aslo the yellow tinge...setting the white balance to Tungsten didn't seem to do much. What would you suggest in post?

If you shoot in raw you can manually adjust the color temp in post with DPP. Try raw with auto white balance. Then adjust color temp in post.

You can appreciate that your choices are somewhat limited when you are working from a 1024x683 JPEG.

I corrected the WB and applied a very light Wavelet Denoise.

If you are working from RAW, I'd suggest to go to Manual WB and lower the temperature until you like the whites/blues. You can play A LITTLE with the Tint to handle reds/greens but if you are heavy handed there, you loose it.

Using RAW I can apply many different techniques to reduce noise without significant loss of detail

Thank you Gerry. That looks darn good. Pretty much captures the ccolors in the room.

I'll give your suggestions a try. Thanks again!

MakisM1 a lot of great learning you just presented. Thanks! I don't shoot much inside but I need to bookmark this for when I do.
