Thanks! You've all been super helpful.
Considering I'm more of a filmmaker than a photographer, I'd rather have the lenses be something that is not only as good as I can afford but also of a focal length I need. I was just willing to look at these if they were some kind of super deal through a family acquaintance but if they're not there's no point wasting my time. I think it's best if I reinvest the same money into one or two better lenses.

Unrelated, but I got the impression once from a salesperson at B&H that a UV filter and just a glass protector for the front of a lens are two different things, I always thought they were one and the same. Can anyone recommend a good but cheap 77mm "glass protector for my current lens? I've got a 24-105 IS USM for my Canon 7D. THanks!

I use a lens hood all the time for protection. However, if there is salt spray, blowing sand etc conditions, then I will use a filter for protection.

B&W are top shelf and cost is high. Hoya is good and reasonably priced.
