Hi, I've a well used 17-55 which has ldeveloped the following issue:
When IS is on, the image vibrates up and down violently for about 5 secs when the shutter is half pressed. The problem goes away when the lens is zoomed to 50-55mm, but happens at all other focal lengths.

I can use the lens OK with IS off. I cleaned the contacts, but it looks like an expensive repair.

Anyone seen this sort of problem before?

I had that issue and it required a new IS module. I think there is a known issue. It didn't cost me anything to get fixed after sending it to Canon to evaluate.

Mine is starting to do this in some conditions...

7D, 450D | 17-55, 10-22, 55-250, 50 1.8, 580EXII | YN568II | YN622 x3 | Magic Lantern | (Still) Jonesing for a 70-200 2.8...
Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!

Well, that's how it is, I guess. Bought the lens used, so no warrenty. I'll take it to Canon.

It's replaced an old 28-70 2.8L that got a bit fungusy, and I like the IS.

thanks all.

I just bought a 17-55mm. I knew this was a problem on the older lenses but I thought the new ones might have a better IS system.

I think mine's pretty old, by the look of it...

Canon will fix it right up. Replace the IS, cleaning, and calibration and you're back in buisness.

thanks, I'll do it after next week. I'm in the middle of a two-week shoot, and this is my workhorse lens. It's got dust inside, and a big fat scratch on the front element (I got it cheap, used), and now the IS is f****d, but I can still get great images from it!

Next week I'll take the 28-70 on the 5D for backup...

Update on the IS issue - Canon NZ won't do it free, they wanted $400, and another $200 to replace the scratched front element and clean it out.

Funny thing is, the IS does not work except at 55mm, and there it works great. So I'm going to use it as it is, til it drops dead.

If the scratch isn't affecting pics then do the is repair. You dont think it will be worth having an almost like new working condition lens on top of what you paid (unsure of that)

Canon 70D/70-200 f4/17-55 2.8/BG-E9/430EZ I like DSLR's. It makes a distinction between photo fans and normal people who don't give a damn how a picture could look like

The IS problem OP describes happened to my 17-55 as well. Warranty was out and Canon Norway charged $650 for repairs! Too much, didn't do repair it. Disappointed!

Interesting what people are stating for fees. The Canon repair "estimator" at https://www.usa.canon.com …yCode=onlineRepairLanding (external link) comes up with a charge of US $219. That might not include the front element replacement would could be deemed "abuse".
