I desperately need a flash. This is the best I could do to dodge her face a bit

Candid shots of the kids don't have to be perfect. I imagine they would get pretty bored with toting reflectors and flashes around with you.

With no flash your best bet, aside from a reflector, is to spot meter the face and shoot for that. It will cause the BG to blow out but the face should be good.

What editing software do you have? These are quite fixable.
