You'll love it. The push pull zoom is the best feature of the lens imo, although others seem to hate it. With focus point expansion turned on, you can wait at around 100 or 200mm, acquire the BIF in the vf, quickly slide to 400 and shoot, all in one motion.

Cool I will have some practicing to do. Shipped today and should be here Thursday.

You shot a 1/4000 shot at 1600 iso on a 550D. Try to keep your shutter speed at 1/1000 or so which should be sufficient. You could have dropped your ISO considerably and got a better image. As others have said, keep at it. Long lenses require practice.

+1 to what was said. You may need to bump the aperture to f/8. It is supposed to get a little sharper when you do that.

Wow this lens is stupid sharp compared to my 70-300 non L.

No AMFA done, straight out of the box.

Mallard and Coot at f/5.6 the rest at f/8.0. I have decided that I will shoot non-flying birds at f/5.6 and most likely the flying birds, too.

Congrats! I knew you'll love it! And the extra 160mm won't hurt either! ;)

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thanks Scrum

I noticed I was getting better IQ at a 75% crop with the 100-400L than full shot on the 70-300.

My Sigma 50-500 has gone back to Sigma, and in the mean time I have a 100-400 to replace it so I should have some more photos to add soon. :)
