I've used a 600 with a 7D and a 400 5.6 with a 7D. I found it very difficult to find the birds with the 600, but with the 400 it was great. But I don't have a tripod and have to hand hold or use a monopod.

Thanks Sgt Ed and Chris .... and once again Steve. The pics of the photographers remind me of the look at North Chagrin Reserve, in Cleveland for the fall wood ducks.

I understand the "if" factor but if you don't go there will be a 100% chance of -0- eagle images :-)

Agreed. I've put on 350+ miles in the last week chasing the elusive Snowy Owl (like chasing smoke) while others have stayed home. Same results "0" but I tried.:)

Here's my favorite shot from last year. My salt-ridden car with fish guts/blood on it since an eagle decided to drop it's meal right on my car. Made a nice loud thump when it hit.

Here is the culprit right above me.

Hoping not to drive folks here crazy, but I have another question ..... Do or have any of you used a polarizer when photographing the eagles? I have done it many times for other birds "on the water" wondering about at the L&D how it might work?

No, I don't want anything that might require me to raise my iso. Shutter speed already has to be really high. I've seen people use flashes with great results.

You can't get really good shots at 13. They are just too far away. They do fly overhead, but you typically won't get any good action shots of them fishing, unless you have a 500 or higher lens

You can get good shots here in sterling Rock falls, about 30 minutes from L&D 13. Just go to the lower dam and the upper dam is worth a look too. It can take some luck and a lot of patience some times, but when they're active they're all over the dam parking area and you don't know which bird to focus on.

BUT, if you do like most other people and try to go to where you see them, they will just fly away and won't return until you leave. They are used to people at the dam only, otherwise they will avoid you. I just wait for people to chase them to me.

When I was there last year, there was a guy from Germany, one from Italy and one from Japan-you'd be more than welcome.

The counts look okay, but are they fishing near the dam yet? Anyone been out to ld14 to check the ice? I may be inclined to drive out on Saturday morning if there is enough activity.

Larry Williams over at FM has been there. He said they cut down the trees by the picnic area. I don't have a pic of the whole tree but that is where they are often perched when people start baiting them. This is really going to make their fishing habits less predictable.

Pic of tree....
