I almost bought one a few weeks ago then thought it might not offer me much over the Canon 55 - 250 kit lens as it's still only f/5.6 at the 300 end. But it's better?

Tamron is sharp even at f/5,6 at the 300mm end, but it gets really sharp at f/7.1.
it´s very sharp even on maximum aperture, but only in range 70-250mm
I think you can achieve very good image quality with any kit lens, but the biggest downside is IMHO somehow slow and not entirely reliable focusing during shooting fast moving targets, which makes any TELE lens very limited and 70D cant deliver the goods.

i don´t mind not having ultrasonic focusing on WIDE lenses, but on TELE lenses, AF speed makes a huge difference, especially during shooting fast objects on 300mm with such narrow DOF.

another three examples:

Ruddy Turnstone in winter plumage.

All these were shot via Live View. Again, the flippy screen + AF was a great help to shoot low angles.

Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS + various TCs.

hi all, i just ordered a 70d, comes with 18-55 and 55-250. Both STM.
I'm excited about the STM, :). I am thinking of using this combo for all my video needs.
Let me know what you think?

(i currently own a 6d, I use it with a 24L and 40mm pancake)

Great stuff, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Don't do much video myself but for smooth and quiet video AF the STM lenses are the go.

Liking the reflection Rose! A bit miserable down this way too so might have to try something similar to keep myself amused.

Edit: I see the bar on bird photography is getting somewhat higher, of late...

Canon 70D/70-200 f4/17-55 2.8/BG-E9/430EZ I like DSLR's. It makes a distinction between photo fans and normal people who don't give a damn how a picture could look like

Gabe - how do you get so close? Are they cropped?

What are the shooting conditions (bird reserves, fully wild) are these taken under?

Paul I can't wait to see what you do on the long end of the glass (Sigma 150-500); I figure anything you touch turns to gold.
Gabe, as always admiring your bird work with awe.
Palad1n-I bet Tamron loves you considering how many Tamrons you have sold just in this thread.
Speaking of Tamron, I just got their 16-28 for Christmas and love it and it reminds me of my only regret lens wise so far for Canon and that is the Sigma 70-200----wish I'd gotten the Tamron version instead.
I'm old/slow and sometimes somethings just don't click (like electricity as an aside); so purchased Reiken FoCal yesterday--will play with it sometime this weekend and see how 'automatic' it really is.
Rose your macro water drops on leaves look great! I've not been shooting much this weekend but have been making progress on the backyard bird studio....and hauling in some material for the insect hotel-just the ground is frozen solid which isn't helping.

I think they should consider give me some percentage of their tamron sales! haha

Paul your shots are amazing, as i have already written under your photo on flickr, i never thought it will be possible to shoot via liveview with such narrow DOF on super tele.

EDIT: last one from gull series:)
