People spell "lens" different ways, it doesn't matter.

The 28-300 came out almost 10 years ago, but the 70-200 f/2.8 II is much more recent with better technology and optics. It should be much better than the 28-300. At the time, I suppose the 28-300 was great.

Wow...nit pickin....or is that spelled wrong?

Actually that is spelled incorrectly, a proper adverb, or at least wrongly.

Submariner... Yep looks good enough for my needs.
I've got a Canon 300mm 2.8 being delivered tomorrow and I still plan to add the 28-300mm to the fold.
I just hope/pray that the copy is as good as the one I rented.
My plan is to put the 28-300mm on the full frame and the 300 2.8 on the crop sensor with a 1.4 tc; this for shooting in the day.
In the evening/morning/low light I'll put the 300 2.8 on the full frame.
This for safari in Kruger.
Plans change of course :)
I'll need to carry a much wider lens too for starfields/milky way (s.Africa has dark skies and not something I get often in my location, especially without lots of clouds.

The forgotten thread about Canon's ugly step daughter of a lens....well mine came in and all I can say is I feel blessed to own this wonderful lens.
Had time for one quick grab before heading to work. No not in the league of the 300 2.8 but it can do so so much more:

Would a 2x TC give better IQ results giving you 140-400mm?

unless its on a series 1 camera, don't think autofocus would work.

I do love the lens - much prefer it to a very poor copy of a 100-400 I had.

Great lens for a holiday- with it, 5D3 and 16-35 am covered for a huge range.

Hania agreed, for holiday it is such a perfect lens especially when you don't have the time or inclination (bad weather/dust/wind) to change out lenses.
I also agree the 16-35 is a perfect mate for the 28-300 but I am leaning tokina 16-28mm versus the Canon...I've got several months before safari in Kruger to make up my mind but in the end bet it will be the Tok.
Oh forgot to mention, just discovered the 'macro' capabilities of the 28-300...now how sweet it that. What bonus!

Yes - closest focus is .7m - quite amazing & very useful!

I've owned the 28-300 for a few years and it's ALWAYS attached to my 7d when hiking in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This lens is way underrated IMO. These captures are straight out of my 7d ..no post and a cheap upload to photobucket where as we all know image quality suffers greatly.

I am borrowing a buddies 28-300 L lense and decided to use it instead of my 70-200 2.8 IS II at this past weekends airshow in Ga. What a mistake that was! This lense is nowhere near in the same class as the 2.8 it terms of sharpness or speed but really had no choice cause the planes were a little to far to really use my 2.8.

Get the 1.4x Extender. It'll turn the 70-200mm IS II 2.8 into a 100-280mm F4 lens, that apparently still out performs the 28-300L.

Hell the 70-200mm IS II 2.8 is such a great lens that even with the 2x Extender it's doing better than the 28-300L. This gives you a 140-400mm f5.6 zoom. Ohh and there's more, if you put it on a 7D you get a field of view equal to a 224-640mm.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=7&APIComp=1 (external link)

However, there is a big draw back to Extenders. Which is that they reduce autofocus speed. Having not used such a set up to shoot aviation though I can not say whether that is an issue.

Awesome to see activity on this lens...fantastic shots out of the Smokies (we hiked 150+ miles in the park last year other than the AT) and the air show.
No doubt this will be my favorite Canon lens....there is something else about it, not quite describable, maybe akin to when someone looks at a bulldog in all its 'beauty' and smiles.
I'm trying to remember the nick-name given to the 28-300, street sweeper? I'm calling mine the bulldog :)

Yup, Street Sweeper or as I like to call it... my 5 1/2# white handled mallet with a 7d attached....may come in handy if I'm chased by a bear in the Smokies, lol. Most that reply have NEVER even seen a 28-300L let alone actually shot with one. As an owner of one , I'll NEVER be without one. Check in here with your 28-300L https://photography-on-the.net …0&highlight=28-300+thread

Different jobs need different lenses, so 85 mm 1.2 is far better than 70-200 any version and 70-200 is better than 28-300 you can also buy a Hasselblad ( $25.000,--) thats blows away the 85mm 1.2.

28-300 i use a lot for almoost all situations and give 90% quality so good enough for A4 prints. No need to chanche lenses is so nice all the time.

1D3 - 24-70mm 2,8 - 85mm 1.2 - 300mm 2,8 IS wow
