Tamron is sharp even at f/5,6 at the 300mm end, but it gets really sharp at f/7.1.
it´s very sharp even on maximum aperture, but only in range 70-250mm
I think you can achieve very good image quality with any kit lens, but the biggest downside is IMHO somehow slow and not entirely reliable focusing during shooting fast moving targets, which makes any TELE lens very limited and 70D cant deliver the goods.

i don´t mind not having ultrasonic focusing on WIDE lenses, but on TELE lenses, AF speed makes a huge difference, especially during shooting fast objects on 300mm with such narrow DOF.

another three examples:

More terrific shots - some of the birds shots are incredible.

Thanks for the information too - so it's the speed of focus as well as the clarity. I don't think I have any decent BIF shots - they're all slightly blurred, same with people moving. Oh maybe I have one or two where I've used single shot, single spot, and luckily anticipated a moment. Sounding more and more like a steal to get this lens - only NZ$528.36!

Paul, 15 feet compared to macro is a loooooooooonggggggggg way ;)
I'd bet though, when the bugs start crawling again (minus that awesome Christmas Eve wasp) you'll be sporting that 100mm macro!

This morning the dogs was going crazy after something. Went out to see what they was after. Found this Raccoon. I think it was eating crabapples.

I found a great ebook on using the 70D. Canon 70D Experience by Douglas Klostermann. It's available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble for 9.99. I have read a small part of it and so far it looks like a great reference to have in addition to the manual. I will report further after I read more.

^ what would be great is to be able to read the manual on the LCD.....I just downloaded/installed CHDK on the G1X and you can read text files on the camera so a manual that you can read in situ.

Some more from my Florida trip. Again, Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS + teleconverter.
The third one is a very heavy crop (about 85%)
The last one is a 50% crop of a pelican's head in flight.
