aratari Mostly Lurking 16 posts Likes: 1 Joined May 2012 More info | Dec 28, 2013 23:00 | #1 Hey everyone, I often shoot at an event center with a 100 foot ceiling, which means no bounce.... it's often poorly lighted and i make it work with a t3i pushing 800 iso, a moderate shutter, and a medium aperture of 4.0, sometimes i use my 50mm 1.4, they are often group shots for the paper so I use my 17-40. I use a 430 with a gary fong attached but im curious at the prospect of using a rogue flashbender to create a bounce. Do these things work?

Dec 29, 2013 07:13 | #2 They are not the perfect solution for all situations but I like it. The following was shot in a dark room. ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/250, 16-35mm at 35mm. I handheld the camera in my right hand and the Flashbender/flash in my left. I have added the diffuser panel since then.

I use mine at weddings sometimes for outside fill. It spreads a fair amount of light so its decent for small groups. I also use mine for macro and it works great for that as well...

We both have had really nice results with the diffusion panel applied as well. A really nice system. They fit in the laptop slot of my bags and work well outside when there is nothing to bounce off of (I use the large with the diffusion panel) and inside I use the small if I'm bouncing the light sideways or up. Even then that's only with the large and extra large, the small and bounce don't have that issue. VanillaImaging.com

It doesn't increase the size of your light source, it just wastes power by throwing light everywhere. Same for the Fong Dong. If you're in a situation where you can't bounce and have to use direct flash, best to a large modifier like a flashbender or just not bother. If you're just going to use the Sto Fen you might as well just pull the bounce card out of the flash head and use it.
