I have the 135L in my kit and the Tammy 70-200 at work. At 135mm f2.8, the 135L is the tiniest bit sharper. But by looking at real images, you'd never be able to tell which was which. Go to f4 and they're identical. One thing I love about the 135L is that it's more of a stealth lens. I can walk around at an event (dinner, awards ceremony, etc) shooting candids from a distance and no one really notices the lens. The Tamron looks big at a small event.

The 135L will shoot at f2 and it shines there. The Tamron will shoot 70-200 at f2.8 and shines at all those focal lengths.

If I had to choose just one, as much as I love the 135L, I'd go with the Tamron. Much more versatile and you're not giving up anything in IQ.

Thank you for your input.

I 've had the old version 70-200 Tamron non-VC and 135L before. And I would still prefer the Tamron. To me the Tamron PQ is good enough and I much appreciate the flexibility of the zoom over the prime.

I've compared the non-VC Tamron, the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II and the Sigma 70-200 (non-OS). The Tamron is very sharp, comparable to the Canon except the long end while the Sigma isn't in the same league PQ wise. At 200mm, the Sigma needs to be stopped down to f/5.0 to match the sharpness of the Canon at f/2.8 in the image center, but the color and contrastness are still inferior. The Tamron however only needs to be stopped down to f/3.5 to match the Canon in the frame center. The Tamron does have terrible AF speed and has no VC though. However the new 70-200 VC seems to have improved hugely in these aspects.
