Don't know whether this has been said before but maybe someone has the know how?
But could I possibly just change sensors in my camera?
I buy the new Sony A7r and drop its sensor into my canon 5d body, and voila I got a great sensor along with a slr camera that doesn't contain video.
I'm sold.
Who can build me such a thing??

Not going to happen. Ever.

Those who want other manufacturer's sensors inside a Canon body has to realise something called "Patent" and "Copyright", licensing from other manufacturers might cost a great deal of money, especially if they are rivals in the photography industry, who is going to pay for this? Canon certainly isn't, so the costs will be outlayed to the consumers, something I don't want to see happening

Probably no one can, except (in theory) Canon if the sensor is compatible enough that it can be merged with the DiG!C chip.

Digital cameras aren't designed to have their sensors replaced. Especially not by a sensor from a different manufacturer, and with a totally different interface for reading out the data.

Patent and Copyright is only applicable if Canon wants to license the right to produce Sony sensors, or sensors implementing any of the copyrighted features of a Sony sensor. It isn't related to using a legitime Sony sensor in a Canon camera.

No patent or copyright gets hurt by installing a Chevy engine in a Volkswagen.

I don't think money would be the issue here if Canon wanted to buy Sony sensors. We could definitely afford the cameras. But Sony might decide that they do not want to sell the sensors. And in a longer perspective, it would be extremely bad for Canon owners if Canon starts to license sensors so we end up with a world where almost all DSLR uses sensors from a single manufacturer. That would put a stop to progress - I really don't think Leica would come to the rescue.

Why not? have you actually tried? know someone who has?

well this guy (external link) has...

and this from nokin (external link)

maybe not use a sony sensor then but how about being able to upgrade the sensor in bodies?
I would like to upgrade my 5d sensor to lets say the 5d3 sensor why can't this be possible for canon to do?

Don't mix different things.

The question and the answers were about a specific thing.

That first link of yours was about replacing one CCD sensor with another - quite a lot of CCD have very standardized interfaces, which means you can buy lots and lots of microcontroller cards with a standard CCD interface and then select among hundreds of different CCD to connect. But not applicable to take your new Canon DSLR and switch to a Sony Exmor sensor.

The second link is no more applicable. There are no really huge technical issues with implementing cameras with replaceable sensors. But any patents in that direction are not applicable to your current Canon cameras.

Yes, but if you buy a camera from Sony, then you have the license to resell it - including the sensor. There might be some licensing limitations involved, like exporting to some countries.

It's if Canon wants to buy the sensors themselves, or the right to make them, that they need to make an agreement with Sony. And they need a license from Sony if they want to market the name Sony or Exmor.

The only thing I would want out of a 5d MkIV is a price drop for the 5D MkIII.;)

Kodak (Trusense) KAF-8300 CCD sensor is probably the easiest to swap of all CCD sensors. Unfortunately, without cooling it's very noisy. I'm looking at an SBIG STF-8300 with this sensor. A lot of CCD manufacturers swap sensors as the interfaces are easier.

With proprietary sensors, this is not the case.

I would love to see the comparison of the KAF-8300 mono vs a mono Canon. I'll bet the difference isn't so great.
