I'm thinking about picking this lens up to try out the perspective on it. I keep reading that everything is tack sharp at f/8, but how does it perform when wide open at f/3.5?

I'm wondering if I'll gain much perspective with the fisheye at 8mm f/3.5 compared to my sigma at 10mm f/4.0?

I'm taking a trip to Iceland for New Years and I'm looking for the best option to capture the Northern Lights. I started thinking about this compared to my UWA as maybe a better option - any opinions?

I used to own this lens. I never shot with it at 3.5. One time I had accidentally put it wide open, and I kept trying to wipe off the lens because I thought there was fog or something on it. That's how unsharp it is at 3.5. I could tell how unsharp it was on my 3" screen. By 5.6, 8, etc. it is really sharp.

Thank you - that's just the info I was looking for. Sounds like it's a fun lens, but not quite going to give me the advantage I'm looking for in this situation.

I'll have to keep it in mind as something to play around with in the future though.

Amazon just had this (Bower version) on the lighting sale... $175.
After looking through this thread I'm going to have fun with it!

Samyang corporate site says old and new are same optically, so ignore the "HD" part in spite of so many Ads claiming it is improved and sharper.. New version adds removable hood, that is only difference per Samyang, Inc. I just ordered the Opteka New version for $210. $30 less than others (i.e, Samyang HD) at this time. With the lost Amazon Gift Card we found laying around, it was just 185.

UPDATE FYI: Everything I read up until buying, said all these were made in S. Korea. Samyang makes such a statement as well. My Opteka just arrived yesterday and the box reads Made in China. Somewhere (Facebook?) I found Opteka stated that they are now making there own Lenses, no longer relying on a 3rd party to do so. So, this is the one exception. I expect it to perform just as well as the others, as they are identical and I expect Opteka to license the total technical ability of Samyang.

Quality of appearance is excellent, fine finish and feel to the iris and focus rings. Even the packaging was impressively sturdy. The plastic tray the lens fits in is very thick/sturdy. The pouch is high quality too. It seems to deserve its reputation for a "Solid Feel". I hope to shoot with it tonight for the first time. (Played with it in the living room - quite impressive!).

Mine just arrived today. Can't wait to try it out, but it's been sitting on the front step for a while waiting for me to get home, and it's -25 today. Going to wait a bit to crack open the box.

Edit: And here it is

Very nice shot, "Shot at the cenotaph in Glasgow yesterday". Is this HDR? I also noticed that flickr shows this shot as done with a 50mm. Is this a mistake or how the comes across in the metadata.

No, all I had was a piece of bristol board and my two YN 560 II speed lights.

Thanks, it shows as 50mm as there are no electrical contacts between lens and camera so it defaults to that. It's not a true HDR, as it is only one shot but the shadows and contrast have been tweaked a wee bit in LR.
