hoping the new sigma comes very close to the 50L in optical performance. sure, it can't do f/1.2 but if the sharpness/contrast/bokeh are close at comparable apertures, then i'm in!

uhh, the current sigmalux is already pretty close.

if the new 50 1.4 isn't better than their old one, which is already close to the 50L, I can't see why they would even make it.

Have you considered the Samyang 24mm? Based on what I've read it's actually better for astro-photography than the L is ;)

I've never shot stars with it so I can't comment but this comparison shows the Canon to be sharper:

But if Sigma ever makes a sharp 24mm f/1.4, I'll definitely give it a trial. They seem to be on an unsuitable roll lately.

Sorry guys but it's still a 1.4 lens. People use the 50 1.2 to shoot at 1.2! The 50L has nothing to worry about.

I disagree.

The 50L is not sharp at 1.2 and the focus shift is annoying.

if the s50A is tack sharp at 1.4 and has good AF, there will be many people that will chose it over the 50L.

Not sharp? Did you see recent posts in the 6D thread and the 50L thread? If it's calibrated correctly at 1.2, 2-4 ft it is! 1.2 is 1.2!

Agreed. I like the 50L for a lot of reasons, but that lens is a problem child lol. I wish it behaved more like the 85L.

Yup. The 50L is 'ok' , but it's notably softer than the 24L, 35L, 85L and 135L wide open.

The 50L is a 'mixed feelings' lens. I've tried many copies, and they were all inconsistent, and of course they all suffer from the focus shift issue.

I am confident that the new 50mm from Sigma will kick the 50L into oblivion. :) And besides, the difference between f/1.2 and f/1.4 is pretty much irrelevant.

Anyone that thinks 1.4 is equal to 1.2 doesn't know what DOP and Bokeh means!

No one here seems to think 1.4 is equal to 1.2. But if the Sigma 50 1.4 A is sharper at 1.4 than the 50L at 1.4, then it will be awesome. And I'm not clear on what DOP is, unless you mean that brand of drinkable yogurt.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but as someone else said: the diff between 1.4 and 1.2 is just too small to notice, unless you pixel peep like crazy.

The new 50 from Sigma might actually match the 50L in terms of bokeh quality. It all comes down to optics at this point.

Really? Then why in the world did Canon ever make the 1.2? Just a fun exercise? To see if they could? Not to mention the 1.0!

You are the one claiming 50L is sharp when it's really not.

F1.2 is nothing but bragging rights, and the difference is negligible compared to f1.4.

This new Sigma 50 is almost guaranteed to trump the L in terms of sharpness and bokeh (there I said it) from f1.4 all the way to f16/22.

Yea, the Canon is sharper, sharpness means little for astro-photography. The Samyang has less CA and flaring when shooting stars ;)

Oh, and it's $600...
