Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'm going with the 50l. What do you guys think about getting one used?

Do it. Half my lenses have been purchased used, and I've never been disappointed.

I bought my 50L used, I'd go for it. Most of them are kept in good shape and it's built like a tank.

No problem.

Ive buyed new but its the best built lens ive ever had. Its solid and everything. Do you have a body which allows MFA? It might need a bit. Its a hard lens to master but youll get such unique images which will render a babyskin smoother than silk :-D

Used is fine. Just use a site like this forum, or another respectable photo forum and try to buy from someone with excellent feedback. I've never had a problem buying a used lens. I will say more recently, I've started buying new because I was spending 1-2K for a lens, I didn't think an additional 200-300 for a new lens was that big of a deal. Depends on how much you can save getting a used one.

Back when my daughter was born, and I had some money and worked at a camera store, so I got things cheap, and I was into Nikon, I used the 85 1.8 the most. Second to the 50 1.8. And believe it or not, I used the 85 a lot for landscapes. So there is more to use it for than portraits.

Ive taken the majority of my shots with my newborn with the 40mm 2.8
IF you know how to use it the pictures are super sharp. I also just bought a flash recently. Bounce it and the pictures come out pro looking.
