If Sony & Olympus do combined forces, they will be a company to be reckoned with. Great sensors, the A7 with it's other mount systems, and the EM-1 I can see the Oly-ony brand :) getting a bit of a boost.

My guess is Olympus will be bought out by Sony. Fuji will be next in line. Companies like Panasonic, Samsung and Sony make their money elsewhere.

Doesn't matter what kind of accolades their products may have, if they aren't making money sooner or later they WILL pull they plug. It's still a business.

Nikon, Canon, Leica; The only three brands I recommend to people myself as they are the only three brands that continue to actually MAKE money from camera sales.

Olympus has many other profit-making ventures. If anything they might sell off their camera division and patents to someone else. And given the directions everyone is taking in the mirrorless game who knows who'd buy it?

tbh the only reason Olumpus is in trouble lately is didnt they get something like a billion dollar fine for laundering money for the triads?

edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympus_scandal (external link)

 @ triads. Precisely Yakuzas or the Japanese mobs basically. It's a cultural norm for small & big business to utilize them to threaten their competition. One reason the country's economy went down the tube many years ago with so much money being laundered and loaned to these crime syndicates which a lot of times were never paid back

I don't think Olympus will last long either though.

Olympus as a brand is 50+ years old. Even if the company folds, the brand name will be used.

Just like you find a zeiss lens on any point and shoot.

And what's olympus making nowadays? Only the three quarter system, which are as relevant as fountain pens.

Name me one major manufacturer that didn't release a camera of the year.

I have nothing against olympus. They think outside the box in terms of the design more often than not. Sometimes good ideas don't bring in profits.

Unfortunately awards don't automatically translate into sales and profits.

true, but then again Olympus outlook for next year is looking better then before.

especially in North America, sales and profits = marketing and brand recognition. Thats why Canon is selling so many cameras that are technically inferior to competition.

I'd venture there are more reasons than that ;) But yes, advertising and brand recognition do help.

Despite the losses the Olympus camera unit has seen, I don't think it's been compelling enough for Olympus to leave the MILC market. Yet.

I doubt very strongly that Olympus as a whole will fold anytime soon, and it would take several more quarters of losses for Olympus to seriously contemplate pulling out.

Make no mistake though, it's as jrbdmb and DocFrankenstein say: good ideas & awards don't equal profit - and profit is what keeps you in play.

Here's a great article about why MFT is doomed which spells trouble for Olympus.
