Since you're 6'4", I would stay away from the Manfrotto 190 series tripods or similar - they're just not tall enough for your stature. The Manfrotto 055XProB is a good choice, as is the Slik 700DX. I've had the Slik tripod for 5 years now and it is rock solid, if quite heavy. If you get the Slik, go for the legs only and don't bother with the massive pot-metal pan/tilt head. Save your money and invest in a proper ballhead instead.

A picture to illustrate my point about the 190's (190XDB and Slik 700DX at full leg extension)

Just received my Vanguard ABEO 323AB, and I love it. It is a little heavy, probably wouldn't want to go hiking with it. However I put my camera with my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO lens on it, tipped it down slightly, using the friction adjustment, and watched. NO CREEP. It's also more than tall enough for me, since I'm only 5'8".

While it's not a $1k+ Gitzo it certainly is good enough for how I'm going to be using it.

I have an old Slik 700dx I picked up in ebay for around $50. Very solid, has been very servicable for me. Despite Geonerd's bad experience with one of his, online reviews from owners have been very favorable.
