Today my boiler died! 13 years old. Was always a bit temperamental - now awaiting a new one £2000 bill. Not a happy bunny!

I've taken a couple, partly due to the fact I hardly shot at all last year, and partly because I'm feeling the urge to explore my hometown, of which I have incredibly poor knowledge. Nothing special yet.

@ Penel ~ that Springer looks so full of character and as for the last one (what breed was he?) even without the ball in shot has lots of energy & movement.

It might be easier to use the get the colour to show up using the white background, but I don't have much experience with anything other than white so I can't say for sure. I do know it's a case of cutting out as much of the ambient as you can, and making sure that none of your un-filtered subject light is hitting the backdrop. You can usually get away with lowering the power of the subject light and/or moving it closer to the subject. Easier with people than dogs I imagine though

I did research it quite a bit online and apparently grey is better for taking the colour than white is - I really did cut out the ambient, I put the blinds right down and it was very dim in the room. I will probably give up on using the gels for now!

really hoping the weather picks up soon, itching to get out with the camera ASAP

these are fab Lee - he looks like he's grown quite a lot already and changed colour too.

Those are some fantastic shots of Noel FTF, love the composition & how pin sharp they are.

I feel like i've been spamming this thread lately, but here is another of St Albans Abbey from me. Probably the last for the next couple of days, until the weather gets a bit less drizzly.

First day back happened last week on Tuesday! It was dull!

I need to get out taking photos too, I seem to spend too much time these days pursuing other activities like cycling and going to the gym...it's not healthy!

I had a play around with some gel things on the 2nd speed light that lights the background paper today - it didn't work quite as planned and I'm not sure why yet. You can see it just lit the bottom RH corner in this shot.

Fair enough Like I said, I really only used white but the process of setting up was always the same for me (it's really easy!).

1. Take a few shots of the background with just the gelled flash firing and get the colour how you'd like it.

2. Switch the subject lighting on and try again. If the colour is all gone, it means your subject lights are hitting the backdrop and overpowering your coloured light. Turn them down/move them away etc. till you get the desired result.

Your doggie shots are great regardless, but always nice to be able to offer some options!

Thanks all, Noel is very cool - I spend too much time staring at him, watching him hunt and feed is fascinating - even SWMBO is smitten, so much so that she wants another one!

...thanks for the comments on the sharpness, the Canon 100mm f/2.8L is a brilliant lens if ANKE is still selling his buy it from him now! That said it was a little tricky holding the 'branch' in one hand and the 1DX with a flash on top in the other

Adrian - I really like the lighting in the studio shots, really nicely done - I think I would have preferred some eye contact but that's just me

Thanks Kev. I will try that. I am pretty sure my subject light would be hitting the backdrop as it's coming out of a 36" soft box. Problem also being that dogs don't always do what you want them to do - a lot of shots are spontaneous so it's not so easy setting up for specifics.
