How the Sigma working with the new Sigma 1.4x? Maybe will buy it!

Hi, based on my one time experience for the sailing shooting, I find vitually no effect on focusing speed or image quality. Should consider it if speed of lense is your priority.

What new Sigma 1.4x? Is there a new one (besides the APO EX DG)?

Sun Spots. 600mm, f/8. Taken with my 70D, 80% cropped, heavy processing, then resize.

... and no filter, just some friendly clouds :)

Sorry everyone, it's my fault. APO EX DG converter is refer to the new one, as my previous one is a 10 yr old one. :o

Oh, I got you :)
Supposedly the newer one (APO EX DG) is better. I have it and it is clearly better than the (also highly regarded) Kenko Pro 300 DG I had before.

One of the military squadrons here has a Frigate bird as it's emblem. Never seen a photo of one before though of any type of frigate bird. Looks weird like half albatross or cormorant and half seagull.

Nice work with the Frigates Gabe. How have you found the 70d to compare with the 7d? Welcome to the group Mark

Thank you!!

70D:
- a tiny bit more resolution; only matters under the most perfect of conditions and a sharp lens (like our Sigma w/o a TC)
- Noise handling better. In RAW a tiny bit less noise, better appearance/nature of noise grain, easier to work with. Definitely prefer it over 7D.
- AF virtually a wash, except for the 2 missing modes (AF expansion and spot AF).
- Buffer smaller, this is only an issue when I shoot RAW and jpeg, which I regularly did with the 7D, but when I know I need a large buffer, I shoot RAW only with the 70D (or jpeg only if IQ doesn't matter as much; rarely happens though.)
- The minimum shutter speed in Auto ISO feature is great, but not too much for wildlife shots (for events I use it a lot)
- AF micro adjustment for both ends of a zoom lens - great!
- lighter, smaller body; that's a matter of taste, I like it and welcome the weight savings (I don't have big hands)
- Wifi is cool; forgot to take a card reader on our honeymoon last month, and had my Nexus 10 tablet with us. We thought we wouldn't be able to look at the photos we shot during the day until I realized I can connect the 70D with the Nexus via Wifi. 2 minutes later we were looking at our photos on the Nexus. :) The Wifi can also come in handy if I want to experiment setting up the camera outside near the feeder and remote control shots from my smartphone/tablet while seeing a visual feed.
- Video is so much better, actually my first video DSLR that I can almost use as carefree as a camcorder (except zooming, which is manual)

- And I left one of the best features for last: the articulated screen + good live view AF. No more lying in the mud/sand and cramping my neck to get extremely low angle shots :) I can do it sitting or crouching while having the lens a couple inches off the ground and angle the screen upwards and use live view. AF is fast and accurate. I really like low angle bird shots and this makes it so much easier.

7D:
- probably a bit more robust, although very few people take their cameras to such an environment where the 7D would survive but the 70D wouldn't. If conditions are that bad, I wouldn't want to expose my 7D to those elements either.

- Ergonomics better for some people, mainly those who prefer the little joystick. I liked the joystick but I'm perfectly fine with the little multidirectional pad too.

- Buffer: simply better on the 7D (after the 2.0x firmware update that is)

Thank you for the real world experience comparison Gabe. Donwag usually a quality 1.4x tc will win hands down over a 2x tc, but the key is quality. A poor tc is just that no matter if it is 1.4x or 2x.
