Learning to use a DSLR. When this was taken, I still hadn't learned manual mode and shooting in RAW. Set for shutter priority and 1/1000th.
Prior image to this was at f/4.5, then when the Blower went grenade, aperture slammed down to f/11.
Canon 40D with Canon EF-70-200 f/2.8L.

Tony Pedragon goes boom. April 2010, Royal Purple Raceway, Baytown, TX

Still in regards to Tony Pedragon's blow up.
I chased the body shell, rather than the car. Well, sort of car.
I neglected to mention ISO above. It was at 800.

What goes up, must come down.

Thanks.

All of those shots were from the stands and with my 70-200. A cool thing about drag racing is you can get some nice shots from pretty much anywhere in the stands.

I assuming that if it's your first time going to NHRA it's also going to be your first time seeing TF cars, all I can say is be prepared to have your mind blown. That's one of things I think everyone should experience at least once in person (even if you're not a drag racing fan).

Thanks for the info.

Yes it will be my first time seeing the fuel cars. Have seen alky and jet cars but never a top fuel car. I have only heard it's something everyone needs to experience. Just happened to work out for a bike trip my friend and I are going on. He isn't into much for motorsports but he's interested as I've really been talking about it. Down there for a couple weeks so couple days at the track won't cut into our riding bikes time too much.

I tried to video several runs with my 7D/70-200, but it was a miserable disaster. Every time they hit the throttle, the immediate explosion of noise would make me jump. Nothing I could do to prevent it! :-(

Pack earplugs. If you will be anywhere close to the start the noise is indescribable. When the top fuel guys light it up, it feels as if every hair on your body stands straight on end. It's insane.
