NCHANT, I just bought the lens and want to do some milky way shots later this spring. My wife's folks live in rural Nebraska where there are no city lights, it shows as a dark area on the sky viewing maps, so I think I'll be able to get some decent shots.

Any "most important" tips for this kind of shot?

Sounds like a great place to shoot the sky! I use an iPhone app to see where the MW will be (GoSkyWatch), there's a few other apps that do this as well, and www.windguru.cz (external link) to check cloud cover. Settings I usually use with this lens are:

ƒ3.5-4.5
ISO 3200+ (ont hé 6D I go between 6400-20,000)
25-30 seconds (+/- 15 seconds depending on light pollution

Try to keep some form of foreground element, and shoot lots :) take a deck chair, bottle of booze and enjoy.
