A filter which the previous owner used for 70-200 IS II can be used for 17-40 well?

I've purchased a used 77mm B&W filter with cost 80USD. The previous owner used it for his 70-200mm IS II (he also sell his 70-200mm IS II but I don't have enough money because he require 2000USD). That filter can be used for my Canon EF 17-40mm well?

Both lenses use 77mm filters, so both lenses can also use the same filter.

It's common for photographers to swap filters back and forth between lenses. Even when filter diameters are different, some photographers use adapter "stepup rings" to move filters between lenses.

B+W makes many different types of filters and different grades as well....

$80US might be a good deal... or it could be a rip-off.

$80 for a 77mm single-coated 010 would be very over-priced.

$80 for a 77mm Kaësemann C-Pol would be a good deal.

$80 would be a screamingly good deal for the latest "X-Pro Nano" version 77mm Kaësemann filter.

So just be careful, ask the seller for all the info possible about the filter and compare the price in stores online before buying.

as others have mentioned...B+W has a full range of both high and low quality products so just beware of what you're paying for.

A few months back I stepped into a shop trying to get hold of a B+W multicoated CPL filter and thought I got a good deal. That filter ended up giving me a lot of ghosting in the images.

Fortunately the next day I went back to the store and I was allowed to top up a small amount to change to the ND110 10stop filter

It should be OK if you are shooting a crop-sensor camera. But if you camera is full-frame, a thick filter might cause vignetting. If your filter is a thick one, consider getting a thin filter for the 17-40.
