I read on a website/blog that the long telephoto lenses from Canon has periodical updates for the software built into the lens. First off, I never thought that there is actual programming inside a lens much less updating of the software in it. Is it all nonsense or do people with teles send their lenses back into Canon for updates?

I am very curious about this. Hope someone can help clear this up (as I have a 300mm f2.8 Mk1 and never went into service centre for years).

Thanks!

Soon after the release of the mkII teles (500, 600, 400 2.8, 300 2.8) Canon release a new firmware to fix some bugs with focussing, a few people did complain about it on certain bodies. I have only seen this happen once although it may have happened before.

Googled and found this - http://www.photographyblog.com …e_for_4_telephoto_lenses/ (external link)

So it looks like I was mistaken as it deals only with the Mk2 versions. Thanks for the help!

This seems to be authoritative about the question....

Yes like I say only the mkII teles were recalled for upgrade, but could not be sure about older models. Could be with the dawn of the Sigma USB dock that Canon could do something similar if it becomes common place.

Is there a date code cut off for those needing to be recalled?

Thanks
