The closest I've so far managed to get (about 35 - 40 feet away). 1000mm @ f/8:

Doesn't look like to me you need to get any closer Mark, those are both stunning portraits.
The pose in the 1st is classic, but the behavior and red feet in the 2nd make it the real winner to me. Excellent job!
