I read in another thread about lens firmware upgrade. I have done it on different cameras but never have heard of it being done on a lens. How is it done?

If possible, only by the maker at a service center.

Just sent my 300mm f2.8L IS II USM to Canon for firmware update from 1.0.0 to 1.1.1 I had missed the original announcement. Canon will do it free of charge.

I believe this is also possible by the user with the dock compatible Sigma lenses.

I have updated my 40 2.8 lens firmware thru my 5dmark III, wouldn't be surprised if it has to be a compatable canon only lens though

I am still using the original f/w because I don't have the right camera. And sending it to Canon is cost prohibitive.

EDIT: Sorry I misread your post. I thought you meant 7D

Apologies to OP. Didn't mean to hijack. This is my last post.

Yep it is on the canon page of updates. The lenses with available firmware upgrades are EF 40, 300, 400, 500, and 600.

Good info, I was worried about my 500mm and I may have send it back for an upgrade, after checking the Canon site; I'm at the latest.... cool.

Per the Canon web site:

"Cameras that can be used for the firmware update: Canon EOS-1D X (*1), Canon EOS 5D Mark III (*1,*2), or Canon EOS Kiss X6i/REBEL T4i/650D"

I'm thinking that's not accurate since the statement was made before t5i, 70d, and sl1 were released?

Good point, although it is accurate but probably incomplete.

Thanks all. I didn't even know the 40 could be updated. I'll give it a try when I get home.
