Man those are excellent. Every time I try to sneak up on a local Kingfisher near the retention ponds where I live, they leave. They're super spooky.

Were these done with a flash? Is that how the background was blown black?

Very best,

Thanks very much. The odds of sneaking up on a Kingfisher is about zero to none. If you want to get close you have to let them come to you. That means being at their favorite fishing spot, staying out of view and moving carefully to draw as little attention to yourself as possible. I don't own a flash, the shadows behind the bird are cast from large trees. By metering for the highlights the shadows naturally fall lower on the histogram.

Thanks very much Dave, can't forget the speed. They remind me every time I see them.

Exceptional images Steve. I can never seem to get anywhere near that close and the mostly are just flying by. Well done.

Thanks Don, have to play by their rules. I had one land no more than 5 feet from me a couple weeks ago(too close to photo). Without the camo drape that's never going to happen. It was really cool to look at one that close, it stayed for about 15 minutes or so.

No idea how I missed these, Steve, they're great. Maybe next time she'll give you a break and pose for you ;) or maybe not.

Great shots--surprised to learn these weren't shot with fill flash--right down to the catchlight in the eye, you could have fooled me! Very nice sharpness with the 1.4x attached, too--usually it's fairly easy to tell "bare" vs extender shots--not so here, a testament to good processing. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Ian. She was hanging around today but not doing much posing. She kept coming in when the sun was behind the clouds and not staying put long.

Thanks Kenn, great to see you here. I've missed your posts. I hope Temple and yourself are well.

Awesome.

Thanks. When the sun is low in the sky at this location and the birds land in the ideal places(eye level with me) the catch light can be fairly centered on the eye at times, giving a flash-like look. I've finally got my micro adjustment with the 1.4x where I like it. Pretty sharp and lately I've needed it with the Kingfishers, they're acting a bit more nervous than usual so I've needed the reach.
