^ the cat image turned out pretty good, but using black, I would have put a reflective surface down for the cat to be on or maybe something else. It just appears to be floating in black space. Lighting is good though!!

Thanks for the feedback. That's what I think too, maybe a white backdrop would've rendered better. The cat having quite some white parts I went for a black one which wasn't the best idea.

I do portrait work all the time on solid white in my studio. However I always have a sheet of white (shower board, dry erase board, marlite board) whatever it is called, on top of my paper. It gives enough reflection, wipes off easily, and you buy it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Works great for me! Even with white...I don't like it to look like they are floating! lol

I don't know about that, I think that the cat's colouring goes well with a black background. I agree that some rendering would have been better.

Cheers, Damien

Recently got an umbrella kit and reflector, so testing them out in the basement. This is my first time trying anything like this, but looking forward to doing it lots more.

I really like it, especially for your first time. I'd throw the sheet in the dryer with a wet towel to get rid of the wrinkles next time, though.

Thanks and definitely. I tried to blow out the sheet with flash, but some wrinkles still made it through.

I went through this whole thread over a couple days. It was excellent reading and impressive ingenuity throughout! Thought I'd share my very humble setup. <$30 and I've taken product photos with it for years. I would put diffusers on the lights if I weren't cheap, but I am. If you're careful about reflections, this is the bare minimum to get decent product photos. They're definitely NOT as nice as the vast majority of the setups here with external flashes, umbrellas and what-have-you, but it has worked for me for a few years.

Shop lights @ Lowe's/Home Depot - $8/each
3-pack of 100W-equivalent daylight bulbs - $10
Sheet - Not sure, but I already had it, so free for me.
Total cost: $26
