If I had a penny for every time this lens was predicted...

..you'd be 1/5 as rich as Watt100.. 6 posts above you.

I'll take $1000 per rumour, thanks. I want to be properly rich.

2014 will see the replacement of the Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS, and we should see some new new patents showing new optical formulas for its replacement. Below is a patent for an EF 70-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS.

Or maybe not.

Canon Rumors have been posting this guff for over 5 years (external link).

Well you have to admit that eventually they will be right. ;)

A 70-400mm would be an interesting companion to the 24-70mm and alternative to the 70-200mm lineup for those who just want one longer lens.

Canon 40D w/ BG-E2N Grip| 400mm f/5.6L | 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II | 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS | 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 | Gitzo GT3541LS w/ RRS BH-55

And a pretty direct competitor to the Nikon 80-400, though you're getting close to a 6:1 zoom ratio

the 70-300L will look like a cheap alternative when this thing comes in at double the price for an extra 100mm...:)

70-400mm seems strange to me though...but i'm not putting too much stock in the latest rumor...it's probably just like all the others...

The 70-300L is a seriously under appreciated lens. Though whenever canon does decide to replace the 100-400L, if they give the mark II two similar IQ and IS to the 70-300L, they'll have a real winner on their hands, even if they do charge 2000$ for it.

But Sony has a 70-400mm, and based on all the reviews I have read it is a stellar performer. The ability to go from 70mm to 400mm with the same lens has made me consider buying a Sony body and that 70-400mm lens. Nothing Canon has can match that range.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

ok...but wouldn't it be strange if sony updated that lens with a 100-400mm focal length...i think the strange part is to supposedly give an update to a 100-400mm lens, and then change the focal length
