I made my first trip there today. I am paying the price of having to work midnights and begin up for 24 hours, but I must say, it was totaly worth the trip. One I will be making again. I haven't had a chance to even look at some of the ones I captured! The images shown here is was persuaded me to go. You guys capture some amazing images!

When using the Canon 100-400mm IS birding, do most use a tripod or hand hold taking the eagle pictures at the dam?

I've seen both but mostly they handhold. Last two times I've been there I saw someone hand-holding a 500 or 600....couldn't tell which, just knew it was big. You'll have a lot more freedom moving around with a monopod or hand-holding.

Looks like the eagle count is dropping. Season coming to a close soon? :(

Mid February is usually the end of the season. I was thinking it might go a little longer this year because of the extreme cold here in the midwest, but what do I know.

I was hoping for the same.

WOW Andrew - this last image is crazy, looks like a huge fish!

Yeah ,that was one big Shad ..a live one no less the bird couldn't even get altitude to take it to the trees, had to settle on the ground which ensued a 5 or 6 eagle fight over the fish quite a sight .

Were you the one who said you forgot to bring the tripod? Notice a guy standing next to you with a Nikon 200 f/2? :D

If I did say that it was in jest only ....never take a pod there. Don't pay much attention to other peoples lenses.

Have not had much time to look... But how is this weekend looking? Is the weather going to work out? Birds still around?

Thanks.

Just got back from the most amazing day I've ever had at L&D 14. The birds were everywhere and they were fishing like crazy. Six eagles in the trees behind the parking lot. 10-15 eagles in the trees on the peninsula. Dozens flying out over the water. Wow, it was simply amazing. Lots of fights over the water and lots of fishing going on. Pictures to follow.
