To put it into perspective, that "crazy" amount of money that the gear is worth, is equal to 0.000835% (0.8 milipercent!) of the money spent on the Sochi Olympics.

Having said that, I imagine no one will be upset if I help myself to that Buffet... ;)

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

I seem to remember seeing rooms full of gear at the London Olympics. There were shelves and shelves of cameras and lenses. It put this puny table to shame.

Im sure theres more than one photog using that gear - it isnt quite so impressive split among 5-10 photographers.

Still is a lot of gear though.

Thinking about it, im sure if the crew at work got their gear out it would fill a bigger table.

One seat costs 20-50 thousand dollars.

So that's what? 7 to 15 seats?

Why 200 f1.8 vs the 200f2 IS? I mean you have the new 200-400, why not the new 200 f2

In the article it mentioned that most of this gear would be for backup reasons to photographers personal gear. This amount of gear as backup should support 30-40 photographers.

The author posted the wrong specs. The 200's pictured are the 2.0 version, as seen by the tripod collar. The 1.8 version hasn't been in production for years, and with Getty images rotation of gear, I doubt they even have a 1.8 in their inventory.

I was wondering about the 200/1.8s as well.

Why no 600/4?

Google "Canon professional London olympics" and look at the images that come up. Drool worthy.

If you've paid the kind of money they paid to photograph the Olympics, you'd have some backup gear too! And in a harsh environment, shooting sports, anything can happen to your gear, and you wouldn't have time to wait to get the lens back from Canon's warranty service, that's for sure!

By the way, when I went on two weeks vacation in Sochi in 2006 - they were already. At least seen a few.

London was also a summer Olympics, with probably 3-4 times as many athletes and events.
