The game will last 7 days and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only. Feel free to comment and/or ask questions at any time. This is a good competition for learning new methods, so let's make it a bit more dynamic. I will be judging edits, not comments. Feel free to comment on the original image as well.
If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #507".

Submissions end, Saturday, February 15th, 2014 at 5pm (D.C. time) and a winner will be announced.

Here is a raw image from some product stuff i was doing (before we moved). http://ge.tt/7emATaJ1/v/0?c (external link)

Opened in Camera Raw and adjusted white balance, exposure, whites, shadows and highlights. Cranked up the clarity and vibrance and sharpened.
In CS6, duplicated BG then cropped and straightened. Selected pink and added 20px to canvas size. Put original back on own layer to created drop shadow and bevel emboss to finish.

Editing done in CS4
Used a new trick I learned from NigelD, I Converted to Lab and inverted.
Switched out the background with one of my landscapes.
Cloned a few leaves over top of the base to help make it look like it belonged there.
Did some burning to help blend it in with the background.
Used NIK tonal contrast to enhance everything.

Sorry, but I'm pretty swamped with work as it is. No time for this and especially no time to set up the next contest should I be lucky enough to win.

Another "not remotely simple" one to judge.
Excellent work again. :)
At least i have 3more days to think about this.

Time to judge (well.. almost a day ago it was).

NigelD-Great work with regards to sharpness and color. This is very close to the artist's final pick that went to print.

FrenchFX- i like this. nice clean color changing. Perspective on the new background is very close to the angle/fl in which the original was taken. Great background choice too. The light on the subject does not match the shadow on the underside of the branch above and behind the subject's head. I have to be picky because these are all so good.

YB98- great color vibrance, contrast and crop/composition.

Douglas-

As per your request, i will not judge you.
Really fun edit. Smart caging the creature in glass (douGLASS?) :)

Krottski-I like this. Good call giving this creature a friend. Nice subtle background change too.

You win.

From last week-

I spent a couple hours on a PS edit for this one with a different background but then thought that maybe we were starting to drift away from the original intent of the "before and after" competition, so I just stuck with only editing what was originally there.

I generally view this competition as taking it as far as you want. If the subject is still there, a new background can sometimes add a lot to the image. Plus, i also see this as a great way to learn new techniques. I have learned a great deal from NigelD, YB98, msix and several other's breakdowns over the last several months. So, don't hesitate to post the image, you could have potentially taught me a new skill. :)
