This picture was taken in the Western Nebraska Panhandle before Christmas. I believe it is a Ferruginous Hawk, and it is sitting on a Pheasant. I do not know if it caught the pheasant or if it was road kill, but the hawk allowed me to photograph it from fairly close. Taken with a 7D, 100-400L, f8.0, ISO100, 1/320 second, with a -.66 exposure compensation. Image was processed in Lightroom, with adjustments and filters applied via Viveza 2 and ColorEx Pro 4.

I would love your feedback on the image, particularly the post processing, whether you feel it is over done or not. I am working remotely on a laptop that is not color calibrated, so not too sure about the image.

Also, for the birders out there, do you agree it is a Ferruginous?

Thanks for looking.

I can't help with the ID, but I really like your processing. The snow color maybe off, but that's minor. Great capture.

Very nice shot, unsure on the ID also. I am leaning to Red-tailed Hawk though.

Thank you all for the comments. I wasn't sure about the ID, because I felt the head was not light enough for it to be a rough legged hawk, so thanks for the help with the ID.

As for the snow, other than adjusting the highlights, shadows, etc. I made no color changes. I think it is a little darker because I used the detail extractor filter and it really brought out the individual ice crystals, which is partially why I like the texture in the foreground.

For comparison's sake, here is a copy of the image as imported into Lightroom without any adjustments.
