I'm thinking of buying a Canon EOS 550D for shoot video, and use it as a backup photocamera as well. It has good photo and video IQ according to many review websites, and cheap. Is it a good idea?

You'd be much better off with a purpose-made video camera to shoot videos.

What are you shooting video with now?
Have you used a DSLR to shoot video before? It isn't like shooting video with a camcorder.

The only video camera which is as cheap as 550D is Sony Handycam 220, and its video image quality seems to poorer than the 550D's video image quality.

If you're good with no AF during video, ~12 min max continuous recording time, zooms that don't hold focus while zooming (at your budget point), sure, it takes great video. These guys (external link) use the T2i for wedding videos, but they have the extra rigging to go with it.

Do you shoot video on a DSLR now? What kind of video do you plan on shooting? DSLR's are good at some things, not so good at others. In particular, due to lack of autofocus when recording, the 550D is not ideal for moving subjects (unless you are using follow-focus to hit pre-determined marks). Also, when you start adding-in the price of good quality glass, you can quickly exceed the cost of an entry-level pro camcorder.

Try a 650D / T4i, with a stm lens. It will do continuous AF doing video, the 550D won't fyi.

Not a good plan. It won't do long video with autofocus very well and it will be noisy depending on the lens. A lot of dSLRs are not good for use as HD video cameras. Some of the newer ones can do it well. But the older ones are a no-go. For the cost, you should look at an HD video camera meant for video.

I would look at it like this: if you want a camera for stills, with the option to do a video here and there, but nothing crucial to video, then the dSLR is good. If you want to do video shoots, get something made to shoot HD video exclusively. And take a backup camera for stills.

Very best,

Are there Canon EOS bodies which can autofocus during shooting movie?
