Snowflake photography, Canon 7D + EF 100mm 2.8L is usm + extension tubes + just some random stuff and tape.

Please excuse my ignorance...what is the purpose of the random stuff and tape contraption?

For holding external UV filter as a base for snow flakes.

Great snowflake shots. Love the use of the dead space.

What's that circular thing at the far end of the 'rig'?

Man, I really need to purchase those Kenko tubes now. :)

for those snowflake shots, how do you manage to catch a single snowflake like I've seen on some of these photos. Usually when it snows, the snow flakes come down in clumps.

Awesome! Tell me if I'm wrong but you stick UV filter in freezer then strap it and take the shot?

I'm shooting these outside so no freezer required.
Best weather is -5 ... -20 degree celcius with slight snowfall, individual flakes to be catched directly to UV filter. Sometimes I use a small needle to separate different flakes on UV.
Yes, those snow clumps are a bit more difficult :)

Ah-ha! My suspicion was correct, that the UV filter was functioning as an stage rather than a, well, filter. I have used an old sock, but it's hard not to get the fabric's texture in the shot, thus ruining it.
