Problem with that is if there was any virus or anything on your computer then it can corrupt your cameras firmware. I used to connect my old 550D directly to the PC till I read many stories of peoples cameras getting corrupted and the hassle of getting it fixed.

With the 400D and now 6D I always download via EOS utility. I suspect it may act as a bit of a barrier for flow to camera. I don't use a card reader or treat the camera as external memory ie flash drive etc.

I use old fashioned virus avoidance, ie turn off internet and computer when not in use, use Firefox and Gmail and Thunderbird, don't open unknown emails, or spam, avoid questionable sites, keep anti virus up todate. There is still good free antivirus software out there. (Just run one, they can argue :) ) Oh yeah, I avoid Microsoft software where I can also, I really do not trust it too much.

Does the eos app actually transfer RAW files? I thought it automatically scaled them down to jpeg when you transfer them to a phone/tablet? I only ever shoot RAW and have always shot RAW since I first got my jpeg.

Even if you don't have a card reader in your pc, you can even get a USB card reader that does the exact same thing ^^Yes as long as you have something good like Avast you don't really have to worry.

This is correct from my experience. You get about a 2MP JPEG preview on your phone or tablet. Happy its not a RAW files, but I do wish there was an option to transfer full res JPEG.

I think the reason they transfer such small jpeg files instead of full res is they intended it to be uploaded to social media sites which scale it down anyway. Hopefully they expand the app more soon. I wouldn't want full RAW files on my phone either!
