Slowly portfolio building and so far my only subjects have been family and friends all of the same race as me. How can I get myself out there with different backgrounds and races as me if I do not know anybody in these groups? I don't want to be that person that only shoot one group of people.

Co-workers or friends of those friends and family members you've shot... Teammates on the kids' sports teams... Neighbors... Friends of neighbors.

Find a fandom convention where people wear costumes. You can get images such as these if you travel to one of the conventions with a camera.

Costumers enjoy photographers' attention, and the experience will help teach you how to handle a wide variety of lighting, along with lessons on how to deal with real people.

There are guides available online that will help you locate anime (external link), comic book (external link) and sci-fi (external link) conventions around the U.S.

Join a meetup group in your area; tons of opportunities to get images of all shapes, sizes, colors, religions, ect. Lots of models are asking the same question as you yet in reverse; how do I build my portfolio with different looks, styles, ect.

Both can be satisfied by getting involved at the community level.

Not to be facetious, but how would you approach anyone outside your family and friends to take their photograph? There is really no difference.

Heres a portfolio of street portraits I've been working on. All strangers. You just approach them and ask.

You just get out there.

You could always put out a casting call and pay models that meet your criteria. Or even call a local model / talent agency. Working with professionals will make your life much easier, especially if you're just starting out your photography career. You can focus on getting the shot right and they will take care of the posing part.
