Good morning. I posted an ad in the "buyers" forum requesting a 430EXII flash. Well I got a few responses, and the one I went with was from "xxxxxxx". We agreed on a price, I sent him the funds via paypal gift. He provided his email and phone number so I thought everything was on the up and up. Well here is when I sent the payment...
Date:Feb 12, 2014
Time:23:15:41 PST

Next communication was last week when he informed me the flash was sent and he would provide tracking and it was shipped through fedex with a delivery date of Feb. 19th. I have emailed, texted, called, pm'ed him with still no response. I have bought and sold in this forum with no problems to date, using regular paypal and paypal gift. I would like some advice on this matter. Thanks

About all you can do is wait and see if it arrives and keep trying to contact the seller. Paypal gift is a bad idea.

It's only been a few days and it was also during the weekend. I would give it a few days to see what happens. Shipping can take up to 7 days depending on the distance it needs to go.

And I NEVER use PP gift. You save a few bucks but in the end, you are now stressing if the package got shipped or not. At least with Regular Paypal, you can put in a claim.

phone numbers can be easily obtained for a few bucks. You can buy a prepaid phone and use that foe sales and it's not trackable.

And Especially with a member that has 3 posts, very sketchy.

You can always contact paypal and see if they could do anything, but you paid using the "gift" method. You have no protection because you violated paypals terms and the gift option is only meant for gifts. All you can do is report the seller to the mods and hope that the seller truly shipped the flash. If you have his address you could contact the police as well. Just use this as a lesson learned. Hope that the seller shipped your flash, but has not visited potn to return the PM's.

Good luck!

Best advice : Never ever ... ever use the gift option. Unfortunately you learned it the hard way. Read this : https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=292688

Be it a 100$ or 2000$ item's worth, better pay the 3% for your own safety. Other than that the best thing you can do is trying to contact him as you already did. What sounds strange and looks like a scan is he is not replying to any of your emails.

Report it to the admins too but I don't think they can help you get your money back, and wait for any news about the package, maybe it will show up !

Hope everything will be resolved !

3 Posts, member for 2 weeks (as of today), and 2 of those posts were in response to WTB ads. Honestly, I think you should write this off as a lesson learned, and next time a seller wants it as gift, pay it the regular way, but add 3%. That way the seller ends up with the same amount as if you sent it gift, and you retain your protection.

You should remove his name, or the mods will remove this thread.

If he didn't give you a tracking number, I can assure you it wasn't shipped. :(

I have not read any of the responses and I will say this.

Don't Do It Ever. Just pay the fees and be done with it.

Hope it is just delayed shipping, but Paypal gift, no way in he11 I would send any money that way.
I know it has been discussed many times but if a seller requests to be paid as paypal gift I will find it somewhere else. Not worth the chance to me and besides it is just not right. I am NOT sending a gift, it is a payment.
Flame on if you must.

Never use pp gift, if you pay with goods it protects the buyer and the seller, gifted doesn't protect either one of you.

According to what you quoted the seller as saying, he didn't ask for Paypal gift.

"Here is the original message he sent me:

I know this won't help you get your item, but I'm curious as to why you used Paypal gift option. I hope the flash arrives soon. I can pretty much guarantee Paypal won't help you. I mistakenly sent $200 to a stranger by using an incorrect email address. I realized it within minutes, and the recipient had already accepted the payment. Paypal just said sorry.

i hope it arrives.

Personally, I always use regular paypal, even with smaller transactions. I'd rather lose 3% on fees for 9 out of 10 transactions than lose an entire purchase price 1 item out of 10. it's all risk based, so it depends on your tolerance.

No feedback, no buy. Simple. I see less than 100 posts and I move on unless the seller has rock solid feedback. And not to beat a deceased Equus ferus, but PP gift is a no-no unless you really trust the seller. The word Gift in German means poison. Just say no.

You may also want to contact your credit card (used it for payment to PayPal I hope) once the charge posts to your account...which I assume it already has.
