Le Mans, Lime Rock, Saturday, AND I DONT KNOW WHAT I'M DOING

Well, this is going to be my dive into motorsports photography. I am so excited I can't even sleep. My father and I are going to Lime Rock on Saturday to watch the races. I of course want to take pictures, but I think I am going to be in a whole 'nother league up there. I think I will have pretty good access to the track as we are going to be hanging out in the 'corvette corral'. I have rented a 70-200 2.8L with a 1.4 converter... but no IS. I also have a tamron 70-300 if i need some reach.

I think I have the basic ideas down for showing speed (panning, wheel spin) but I don't think I am going to be very good at keeping the cars sharp. When panning do you litteraly follow the car for a split second? I have a monopod, so that will help. I am looking for shutter speeds around 1/60-1/100 for panning, right?

Is anyone going to be at these races? Someone that wouldn't mind showing a young kid some tricks? Like where to be on the track?

I am going to shoot all day, so by the time the Le Mans cars come out, I will have had plenty of practice.

For panning, you may want to start at something like 1/200 and practice and work your way down as you get better at it. 1/125 gives very decent blur, depending on the speed of the subject and how far you are from it.
To pan set your camera to the servo mode so it continuously tracks the moving subject. Start tracking as early as is reasonable and follow it as it comes at you, snap the shutter but keep your panning motion going and follow through, that's important.
In corner shots and the like, 1/320 and 1/400 work well for keeping things sharp be retaining motion blur of the wheels which is important. 1/500 starts to push it and you probably don't want to go any higher than that or your subject will look like it is parked.
