Who told you that I did NOT get wet? The waves came VERY PRETTY close.... ;)

Fortunately this lens is at least a bit splash proof

No pictures just yet, but I received my 14L II from Canon Direct (refurb) and am really happy with the purchase. The 14L II is one of the few I have always wanted, but with the 17-40, 16-35 and samyang 14mm I never quite made the jump... Until I was able to snag it on the 20% sale that is!

Lens arrived in perfect condition... Like new. And the lens is sharp wide open and centering really well, I was surprised. I tend to have bad luck with that.

It is comparable to the 16-35 II at the wide end sharpness wise. Of course, nothing like the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm, but the Canon also has big benefits...

While the Samyang has crazy resolution and no CA what-so-ever, it also does not have AF, terrible distortion and color rendition is poor (always very warm color cast). The Canon has beautiful colors, which makes a big difference to me. Along with almost no distortion which is really nice.

Trade-off's for sure... But in the end, the AF, colors and build quality are worth it for me over the Samyang. Looking forward to using this lens more!

Cool. Congrats. Let us know how you like it compared to the Samyang. Seems like many won't touch the 14L. That the Sammy is all that and more.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

Well I can tell you the Samyang is for sure, sharper when stopped down especially in the edges... And also has no CA what-so-ever. The Canon is about the same sharpness wide open, if not a tad better in the center. At the edges, the Samyang still wins with sharpness. Canon has more CA which is easily fixed in LR5 though, so it is a non-issue.

However, the Canon wins everywhere else... Vignetting, distortion (big time!), color rendition and of course, autofocus... Which I really wanted, even with the immense depth of field.

Flare resistance is better on the Canon as well. The Samyang can get pretty harsh flare in my experience (I have had a few copies over the years). The Canon when pointed basically at the sun in the edge of the frame had minimal flare.

Overall, I am happier with the Canon so far... I prefer the better colors, AF and distortion control at the expense of sharpness. Trade-off I suppose!

Look forward to putting this lens to use!

I like flare. Have a hard time capturing it with these newfangled lenses. :D Thanks for the comparison. Good to know.
