Trying to decide between a new camera purchase - with video capabilities being an important slice of the pie. Currently the T5i and 70D are my top contenders, but would be open to other suggestions as well.

  • This needs to be simple enough for someone with intermediate photography abilities to use, but the ability to grow into fancier techniques would be nice.
  • Microphone will be very important (recording interviews and such) - already planning on hooking up external mic.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated!

60d has my vote. 550d works well with magic lantern for video work also.

The 70D has better focusing capability for video, and if that was my emphasis rather than still photography it would be a no brainer in my opinion. If it had a couple more of the features my 7D has I would swap in an instant. I'm hoping the 7D2 will have the focusing system of the 70D, that's if it ever appears !

Thank you all! @greyline why do you say the T5i is slightly more geared towards constant video use? Does that have to do with the 12 minute filming cut-off?
@artyman thanks for the focusing feedback...super helpful info!
