ahh is it?

did they update the 50mmL?

i guess with lenses you can expect them to update every 3 years lik camera bodies.

Fair enough but i think the 50mmL may be long overdue for a update as the build mechanics are strange as people have pointed out.

the 85mm f1.2 is ridiculously expensive though!

The 50 1.2 was released in 2006 as an update to the 50 1.0 (released in 1989). Lenses are not updated on anywhere near a 3 year cycle. I wouldn't be expecting an update to the 50 1.2 for several more years.

What page and reviews? The link I saw here in a previous post was to the 35mm - and yes so were the reviews.... I thought this thread was really focused on the new 50mm. ???

Any word on the focus issues with the old 50mm? Will they be addressed with the art version? I would be deterred to buy a lens that needed an adjustment 1/3 out of the time.

Well, it is a completely new design and it will be able to use the USB dock for focus adjustments...so I would say AF has been addressed as a design function of the new lens.

The zeiss is amazing for landscape work.

On another note, if the sigma is as sharp as those results portray, the L lenses will drop in price. The Otus will stay the same.
It has a close minimum focus distance, which is just wonderful..
Sigma didn't exactly hit it out of the ballpark on the 24-105, so I'm glad this 50mm shows great early signs.

Yep, Have to wait and see how it all shakes out. One of these 50's will end up in my bag. I wish some pics taken with the Sigma would surface..

The 50/1.0 came out in 1989 and discontinued in around 2000. After that hiatus, the 1.2 was released new in 2007.

The Sigma 24-105mm was never intended to compete with the Canon 24-105mm - it's only noticeably but slightly better than the Canon side by side according to TDP's Bryan and tests.

However compare the Sigma 24-105mm to anything in Nikon's line up and you have absolute devastation. The Sigma 24-105mm, f/4.0 Art, makes all of Nikon's F/4.0 VR zooms obsolete.

You can't really fault Sigma for what they achieved. The extreme zoom range, IS and fast aperture already push the limits of what's possible. A slight improvement is good.

I got to play with a pre production 50 art at WPPI this week. It feels like it's going to be a winner like the 35. They did not give any date but guessing it should be released within the next couple of months.
