Ended up at a Bun B performance last night in Austin, TX during SXSW 2014...The place wasn't overly packed & I was able to move around pretty freely to grab photos of the artists and crowd

Canon 5D Mark III + Canon 24-70mm f2.8
Canon 7D + Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM

Lighting was pretty bad, majority of my shots were at ISO25,600...the 5D3 did pretty well at that number

Awesome shots! I am struggling with my T3i with performances and can't wait to get the 6D or the 5D MkIII.

thanks...key to using your t3i is having fast glass & timing your shots...hit the shutter button when the least amount of movement is happening...if you have something with IS, you can hand hold slow shots...i hand held a 28-135 IS USM at 1/40sec f5.6, 95mm...

just keep practicing...once you get that 6D or 5D3...youll be ready to jump out of the gate and take absolutely stunning photos

Wow, that is OUTSTANDING for 1/40 (at least for me it is)! I will definitely keep this in mind and get some practice in! Thanks for the tip!

It definitely does but I think I need more practice with it when it comes to performances (low-light situations).

find some local, free shows...even if theyre small, no name artists...practice is practice no matter who it is...the only big thing ive noticed when shooting "entry level" artists & big dog names is the size of the venue & the complexity of the lighting...the bigger artists typically have much better stage lighting to help with focusing & overall exposure + the automated LED lighting makes for cool, background fill light

Thankfully I have a 2 small venues that are 5 minutes away from me that has tons of small shows going on constantly. If the rain stops, they may have one today and I might go and get some more practice in!

Bun B was the special guest at Fader Fort SXSW 2014 last night...I got a few more shots of him, as well as a few of Erykah Badu...Rick Ross was the headliner but I didn't get a chance to photograph his set bc I was kicked out of the area I had been in for 30+min by his sound guy...

I got to the spot just to the right of the stage, restricted access, blah blah blah...I looked the part, I walked with a cause & acted like I knew where I was & had a job to do...Didn't get questioned or anything by anyone, until the sound guy shows up for Rick Ross...plus, they had hype guys holding up large cardboard adverts for his new album, which the crowd began to chant, "get rid of that s**t, get rid of that s**t!!!"...it not only blocked me, but also blocked any audience members from seeing anything from either side of the stage...pretty lame i thought, those cardboard adverts were completely unnecessary

i was pushed into a small "media" line and was told, you can shoot the pit after the 3rd song...7 songs later, needless to say, they didn't let us in...meanwhile, the pit was full of guys shooting live view on their d3200s & 1 guy had a P&S up there...not sure who's balls you've gotta scratch to get legit access in this town, but ive yet to find that person

Sweet. You get any other artists? I know Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa went on shortly after Bun B did.

Not at Fader Fort they didn't...Bun B went on & then Rick Ross..Erykah Badu was before Bun B

And no, no other artists...The Bun B at Rio shots were a random occurrence, I ended up there with some friends that got word from 1 of their people

Fader Fort was planned...When Rick Ross came out, I got kicked out of the area I was in and got blocked from the pit

So I went back to my crew & enjoyed the show

Ah I was misinformed. Still those are rad shots. Always nice when you can get close to the artists and not have them above you on a stage.
