I was looking through the list of authorized retailers and saw that Abes of Maine is one of them. I am looking for a 70-200 2.8 IS II lens and saw that they are selling theirs new for $2149. I dont know why that place is a cheaper by almost 200 bucks compared to places like B&H or Adorama. Does anyone have experience with this place? Im considering buying one from here to save some money.

Thanks

After their bankruptcy, they ceased to be an authorized Canon dealer.

They now sell grey market / import.

I had noticed they were no longer authorized, didn't know this was why.

Trust the Canon list, if you want authorized dealers they are obviously the people to ask!

I had a very very mixed experience with Abe's.
Salesman was a liar. Manager was apologetically nice and careful to try to gain my business back.
Sadly, I still avoid.

I bought from them back when they were authorized, and they really liked the high-pressure sale. They claimed to have a problem with my order that needed to be discussed on the phone - and the entire purpose of the call was to try and tack on cheap filters and memory cards to my order.

Now that they aren't authorized, I'd avoid them entirely.

Abe's Of Maine has been around since just after dirt. Back in the film days these guys as well as B&H and Adorama were the "go to" places. Actually back then, Adorama was the shifty one and I avoided them for 25ys+!
Abe's was very good as recently as a couple of years ago on my "L" lens purchase.

I recently tried Adorama again on a couple of minor items just to re test the waters.
Sadly they botched it! I wrote informing them of their mistake and dropped Helen Oster's name and got............. NADA! So what's in a name.

ABE'S always responded before AND after they had my money!
If you're afraid of Abe's......... B&H or Amazon will go the extra mile to win your business.

I'm sorry to see this, but the people in CS probably have no clue who I am! I wish you'd simply contacted me directly.....is there anything I can do for you, now?

No, nothing! But thanks for the offer Helen! If it were Helen Oster Camera I'd be your best customer! The chain is only as strong as the weakest link!

Maybe one of these days I'll "reload" and try it again but only because of your high standards.

You realize that being an authorized (or un-authorized) Canon dealer has absolutely no bearing on the warranty status, right?

I've purchased from Abe's in the past with no problems whatsoever.

Made several lens purchases from Abes without a hitch. True they will call or ask you to call before shipping to "confirm the order". Just a chance to offer a few unneeded items to your cart. Not high pressure though - realistically it is not bad for business (though I still prefer click and ship).
