Just got my brand new 6D kit from B&H and it won't turn on. Brand new from the sealed envelope. Should I just return it, or could it be a problem with a battery? I have tried the battery immediately and also after 50 min of charging, the camera would not turn on. I've never had a brand new camera come DOA before.

i'd call them and see what they say to do. I do not own a 6d and I am not familiar with the operation of the camera. If you happen to have another battery, try that one.

I don't have another battery, ironically, I used to have all these batteries but sold them when I left Canon. I might have to buy another battery tomorrow just to check, I just can't believe Canon would have a DOA camera. I can believe in a bad battery though..

Take it to a store that sells Canon and ask to borrow one to try. The odds of them not helping are slim. I have read on here that this happened to someone else and it was a defective battery and they just shipped another battery.

Since it will cost you something to return it, if you can possibly try it with a battery you know is good, it would be worth it.

I have heard of DOA cameras before though, although I think one was a 'damaged' card door that wasn't quite closing properly.

A DOA camera is pretty rare.

It's usually the simplest thing, such as a battery that didn't get charged for some reason.

What does the charger do when you have the battery in it?

There's a common, minor problem when first charging up the battery. Sometimes it just doesn't get charged correctly. If you are getting a really fast blinking orange LED, see the following:

http://www.usa.canon.com …il&docId=0901e024809ed436 (external link)

Usually there's no problem after this initial charge.

well i cleaned the contacts several times and put it in the charger again and after charging it again, now it seemed to retain the charge and the camera came on. So it was clearly the battery problem 100%. I also read somewhere else, that one may try to put the battery inside a freezer for 10 min and then attempt to charge it again and it helps with some DOA batteries. I am happy that the camera is working though. Thanks everyone for your help

Which is worse?

A.) A DOA camera.
B.) A Box of flooring.

Sorry about your troubles. I hope you get it resolved quickly.

Did you see the thread about the guy who ordered a 7D from Dell, and got a box of wood flooring. Just plain weird!

CORRECTION:
My bad. It was a 5DIII. Here is a link:

Twice? It is hard to believe that happened ONCE! Perhaps Dell should stick to computers.

Well I am glad it turned out to be battery issue for me, 6D seems to be working fine. One thing I am surprised is the top display is not showing whether I am shooting RAW or JPEG, seriously? and no separate WB button, seriously? Kind of odd these basic things are not there.

Congrats on getting it ironed out. Is someone going to replace the defective battery?

Has any Canon camera had raw/jpg on the top panel? My 60D doesn't have that, either. One question though. Why would you shoot JPG, sometimes? I haven't been able to go back to JPG, even with as good as the 6D is with JPG files, raw offers more flexibility. And... if you are shooting raw, WB doesn't matter.

For quick access to raw/jpg you can set up the "SET" button to give instant access to all of the raw and jpg options. You can also use "Q" to see/change parameters like WB. It is also possible to set up the "INFO" button to show you the current shooting parameters. I like the "Q" button, but don't understand the single-function buttons of the 6D/60D bodies. The dual-function buttons of the 5D series just makes more sense.

I am going to play with it to see if cleaning the contacts did the trick

My former 5DM3 did for sure

One question though. Why would you shoot JPG, sometimes? I haven't been able to go back to JPG, even with as good as the 6D is with JPG files, raw offers more flexibility. And... if you are shooting raw, WB doesn't matter.

I normally do not shoot Jpegs on any of my cameras with exception of Fuji X line which I no longer have. The reason to shoot Jpeg of course is that the Raw burst with 6D is only 11 shots, while the Jpeg burst is at least 44 shots (from what my 6D is displaying).

I did just that with Set button. I actually like the single function buttons of 6D and 1D series. I had owned the previous XXD cameras with dual function. I also used to own 5DM2 and 5DM3, and I could never get used to dual function, I could never remember which wheel to scroll for what function. single function for one button like on Nikons and many other cameras work better for me
