Except for the variable aperture, the 15-85 is a great, great lens...

The 28-135 may not be L quality, but it is a great value and completely underrated, and at times ignored. For outside, with more reach than the 24-105, it's my go-to for the zoo or the park...

From what I've used, the 15-85, then the 10-22.

What are the best Canon lenses without the L designation?

There's lots of them:

15mm FE crazy sharp.
24mm f2.8 IS - Easily as sharp as the 24L I, and at 5.6 equal to the 24LII.
35mm f2 IS - Amazing lens. If it handled flare a bit better it would have a red ring
50mm f1.4 when the focus hits.
85mm f1.8
50mm macro
10-22 EFS
17-55 f2.8 EFS - compare it to the 17-40L and it's the hands down winner

I'm sure there are others. L can mean something, but too often in the last 10 years they slap it on anything.

Those who list the 85 f/1.8. I have always heard this lens focus's slow and is pretty much just a portrait lens. Is this the case or is best non L lens just referring to sharpness

The 35mm f/2. Does this thing get focus fast?

Looking for my next lens and both these and the 100 macro are my in my price range/ want list.

The 85 1.2 has slow focus. The 85 1.8 has FAST focus.

I'd say the 40mm 1.8 is a serious contender. I love mine and having compared it closely to the images I've shot with borrowed L glass it's damn close to the same IQ and for the price I paid I can't argue with that at all

The camera is just a tool - it is not responsible for the picture.

100mm f2 - after the 135mm f2, this is the next best Canon portrait lens under $1000
60mm 2.8 macro - sharper than all my L lenses
100mm 2.8 macro (non IS version) - same IQ as the IS-L version at much lower price

35mm f2 IS is a real sleeper but with outstanding results.

I love my Canon 50mm 1.4. Images are very sharp and crisp. Of course you need to be extremely careful with your plane of focus (shooting people especially) using wide apertures. It's a great lens for details at weddings.

Of those I own, I'd pick the 35mm f2 and the 70-300 is usm on my 5D. I also like my nifty fifty but not quite as much as the other two. A decent, reasonably priced walkaround is the 28-135 imho. I bought a 35-135 for 50 bucks (for a specific situation) but I soon got the 28-135. I ain't a pixel peeper but I didn't like the 35-135 much. It's stuck in a bag somewhere, I couldn't find it quickly even if I wanted to. :-)
