QUOTED IMAGE

I have a question about the lighting ratio of this pictures with both ambient light and the maxilite. Also, how much it would change if you used a regular 8'' dish reflector or bare bulb?

(Well, of course the maxilite lets you overpower the sun if you're shooting in midday).

I am reading this book of William S. McIntosh where the most popular portraits he creates are made outdoors, mostly in private yards. He suggests avoiding the hours between 11 AM and 2 PM. His fill-flash routine consists of using a bare bulb flash to light the face and front of the subject when the sun is backlighting. When the incident reading for the face is f/8 he will set the fill-in flash for f/5.6 so basically a 2:1 lighting ratio to make subject's face stand out without overbalancing the backlight effect.

Do you keep the lighting ratio to 2:1 as well?

Thanks

Well you would need a lot of power to shoot at noon as i shoot, and the 8" and bare is not going to cut it for how i shoot.

I blend my lights to fit what I want, i have no set ratio of shooting

That depends on what your lighting and how you wanted lit. On the average mine is set at 5 to 8 feet.

Gah, mine's been on backorder from B&H for a month. Wanted it for a shoot this Friday but looks like it might not happen.
