Ohh sorry! I meant that it's "quiet" like a lecia when you take a picture. It simply makes a "click" noise. Sorry for the confusion, I will change my post accordingly :)

Yes, that I'll grant; the X100/X100s has one of the quietest shutters I've ever used.

put a gaffer tape on the bottom where the speaker is and it will be damn near silent but still gives you that click sound telling you that it has taken the shot.
I love the X100s camera, it looks and feels like a Leica, but it doesn't shoot like a Leica.
If I were forced to cut down all my digital gears to one, it would be an X100s, 28mm and 50mm converters.

It comes down to preference and I did shoot some with a good buddies X pro 1 and I used his M9 for about 3 weeks to and that for me was a much better shooting experience plus FF so I then pulled the trigger on the MM. In my opinion and for the way I shoot and work Leica M is the street king.

out of curiosity and I don't recall if I've asked you already in the past but when street shooting, do you just zone-focus for most of your shots?
I love shooting rangefinder, it feels so liberating compared to SLR or any digital cameras. it's like viewing and capturing the world through a small window.
my main cameras now are 2 MF RF, 2 35mm RF and an A7 for tele lenses.

Yeah I do a lot of my street work by zone focusing and the MM allows me to shoot at shutter speeds of 1/500 and 1/1000 and still have f/stops of f/8 or 11 and all of that great DoF. I only shoot with one lens. 35 Lux FLE. It is very liberating for me to.

I would highly recommend the Fujifilm X100s . . . . It's quiet like a Leica when take a picture

Don't DSLRs have a mute setting? My G15 does. It silences the shutter sound. A week ago, I took several pictures at close range of this woman ahead of me on a train. I don't think she knew.

DSLRs are big for the most part. I used to always get into conversations about gear and caremas when out with my Canon. Not so with my MM. There isn't even a logo on it. It's a lot smaller to. The 35L is twice as large as the 35 lux.

The issue with DSLRs isn't the shutter; it's the mirror. Even a Hasselblad is quiet with mirror lockup.

Of coarse there's no rules, the thing is, probably 95% of the time, people use a longer focal length because they're afraid of getting close, being noticed, or possibly facing confrontation.

I can see street photography as two different kinds of photography.
One type is where you set up with an interesting background in mind and wait for the right person or the right scene to unfold. This often is done with a telephoto lens, but not necessarily.
The other type is usually walking against the flow of traffic, or standing still in the flow, and sniping photos of people as they pass by. This type seems to be easiest with a 35mm equivalent or wider lens, but easy is a relative term.
My keeper rate on the set up type is much higher, since I have more control. Most of my shots (and many others that I see) of walking around snapping pics are just crap and get trashed (or should get trashed) on the first pass through.
All that being said, I'd prefer a rangefinder or pocket camera any day since it's less visible and less intimidating.

I am NOT a street photogapher. That requires a special skill, I just wanted something small with a nice quality image as well as easy to operate. I took it with me on a walk and love it.

Sometimes I wait in places for something to happen, sometimes I'm on move searching but it's always more than just snapping. I look for leading lines, patterns, repeating shapes, contrasting tones and an interesting subject or moment when all of this come together.

iamascientist hit the nail on the head.

Look a the work of those that did have done it very well.Read their philosophies and how they approached it. They are widely varied but there are some common threads that run through and reasons why their work is singled out. Here is a link that I've probably posted in this thread but worth a repost. A good $13.00 spent and a great insight into some of the best.
