Just upgraded to a 5D Mark III. This thing truly becomes magical when paired with FF.

I've used the 70-200m 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 IS, and while the second was a bit lighter, both lenses are extremely heavy for me while shooting portraits, weddings or family sessions on a 5D MarkIII body. As a female with small hands, I'm trying to get stronger (deadlifts!), but in the meantime I am looking for a lighter option that will still give me tele capability to crunch backgrounds more.. I've recently become fascinated by this lens.

I'm not afraid to use older gear (even have a few pentax adapted lenses I use from time to time, though not much on the MarkIII since I'm worried about sensor damage).

Is this lens easier on the hands than a 70-200m? Not just pure weight wise, but overall use? This is an kind of a subjective thing, but I am wondering if there are any other fellow female photogs out there with the camera weight issues (or anyone with RSI) I have who can advise me on this.

I am not a female, but I've used both the 70-200 IS II and I own the 80-200. As far as size and weight, the 80 is a bit smaller. The weight is honestly pretty similar with the 70 being a tad heavier. The 80-200 was called the magic drainpipe because its extremely sharp and its bokeh is a bit different, sometimes giving a magical quality to the pictures, but it is as heavy as a drainpipe. Both lenses have about equal sharpness.

Deadlifts! Nice! Too few women incorporate that exercise. It is truly an important exercise not to be skipped. I'm already impressed.

There's no concern for damage using older Canon EF lenses on the mkIII. Just note that Canon no longer services the 80-200.

In my opinion, however, you're not going to find any appreciable weight difference between any of the 70-200 (or similar) variants. It's just a characteristic of zooms; there are several glass elements weighing them down.

If you really wanted to go lighter, then consider a prime lens - perhaps the Canon 135L. I know that doesn't meet your zoom criteria.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Just checked this thread out for its sample pix... I never even heard of this lens before.. lol, until I saw one from an ad posted online for $600USD in good condition. I was actually looking for another 70-200 ver. I, but then... Why not save the extra $600 right? Very tempting to pick one up. Is there any difference at all in quality vs 70-200 mark I? I've had the 70-200 L mark I with or IS.. I'm really interested how this lens performs.
