Thinking about ditching the Canon 24-105 f/4 for the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8

Pulled the trigger, bought one off ebay from an authorized dealer so 6 years of warranty. Seems like a good price compared to the local shops, $900

Congrats. Price is sweet!

I have played with the 28-75mm Tamron and it was slower and less accurate in auto focus than was the 24-70mm f/2.8L Mk-i with which I was shooting at the time...

I had both lens before and I kept the tamron for its 2.8. I found the tamron's focusing to be less consistent than the canon though. It sometimes refuses to focus and had to power cycle the camera.

Well......bokeh is really scene dependent. There was a thread on the forum a while back where the poster was concerned about it. I looked at the photo that was posted and thought that I'd be more concerned about other aspects of the image before I'd worry about the bokeh, especially since a little pp would have improved the couple of bright glaring Christmas lights by darkening them. Sometimes we become too narrow focused on individual concepts and overlook the "bigger picture".

But if you absolutely have to shoot images with really challenging bright and busy backgrounds, well yes I can understand the fixation on the lens design and how that exhaustively impacts the look of a bad background.

As always, I respect diverse viewpoints and opinions. Your actual mileage may differ.....

Seriously only picky photogs will ever notice. 99% of clients will never see it.

So I shot yet another engagement session yesterday and, although I absolutely love the 6D's high ISO capabilities and know it can handle it, I find myself want 2.8 more and more. f4 just doesn't feel wide open enough in a lot of situations. Not only that, but I was getting a lot of soft photos with my Canon 50mm 1.4 even stopped down and feel it could also take the place of this lens in quite a few situations.

Anyway, enough ranting. I'm wanting to find out if anyone has experience with both and would love to hear pros and cons of the Tamron, especially focusing and IQ. I've read and watched reviews and really find very few faults with it but would still love some first-hand experience, especially from those that shoot portraits, engagements and weddings. The only thing I'll occasionally miss is the 71-105 focal range. I don't have a tele but do use my 85mm quite a bit and it works great. And no, I can't afford both at the moment.

I did the same thing but was planning on the canon 24-70 f2.8. The tamron came out and got it instead, then I got a used 135 F2L from the money I saved.

Exactly.

My Sig 85 and Both Tamrons 24-70/70-200 alone have saved me $2500 over the canon versions.

This money has let me afford the 135 and a few other items. and I will put the 85/24-70/70-200 up against the canons' any day of the week.

I'm looking to do the exact same thing, what was the dealer on ebay you bought it from?

I use my 24-105 on a 5D outdoors (and not often in the rain <g> so the f4 is OK for me. If I had an f 2.0 or 2.8, I'd probably use f4/5.6 anyway. With the 24-105, I'm usually at 5.6 or 8 in any case. I seem to prefer what I call "mid range apertures". When I was shooting a 35mm Nikor 85mm 1.8 for dance, I would usually push the tri-x so that I could shoot in that range. But that's me, TMMV!

I could not be happier with my Tammy. Canon lives in the clouds with their pricing w/o IS here. Got me some nice other things for the price difference and still have money left over. I see zero problems with the Tammy

I got it from Prodigital2000. At the moment they only have a buy-it-now listing of $1199 but once in awhile have auction style listings with a starting bid of $899. Canadian seller though, so not sure how the warranty would work for you in the U.S.

If they are authorized dealer does that mean you can use the $100 rebate??
