I don't think you need 300mm to shoot what you say you normally shoot. That's very very long, even more so for you on a 70D. It hasn't been mentioned, but the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM is supposed to be very good (close equivalent of 70-200mm on crop). I heard it is being discontinued, but I'm sure you can find one somewhere if you are patient enough. Even better, this lens is much cheaper than the others already mentioned.

Just use your 17-50 for a couple of months and see what you miss in it. It's a very good general purpose lens.
